I have just been introduced to the world of STONEWARE!!! Now I've got so mant questions and not alot of luck in getting answers. #1 If I purchase high fire stoneware, I've been told I can use the duncan concepts. Do I use the Diamond Clear glaze on top as I would the ceramic bisque? Also, am I correct that I fire to cone 06 as usual being that I used high fire stoneware? I need to get started soon and all advice and help is apperciated!

Duncan Concepts work wonderfully on Seeley's stoneware bisque. Yes, when you use the high-fired stoneware, you fire as usual at cone 06. You cannot use the Diamond Clear by Duncan. This will not work that well on it. Our recommendation is to only use the Concepts and leave the piece unglazed. For complete instructions, please see below: The tips below refer only to Seeley's high-fired bisque line Stoneware bisque is strong, resistant to thermal shock, chipping and breaking. Use this ware for cooking and baking and for keeping food hot or the ice cream cold! Stoneware that has a lid holds heat or cold for a while which is great when serving food. It is ideal for outdoor use, even during the winter, as it does not absorb water, which would crack the ware when freezing. Decorating stoneware bisque is very similar to decorating ceramic/earthenware bisque. One major difference is that stoneware is vitreous (not porous), so you can decorate part of the piece and leave the rest undecorated and unglazed. The ware is food safe as it is, undecorated. If you want easy clean up after kitchen use, remember to paint the surfaces that come in contact with food as outlined below.. The undecorated surface is more difficult to clean and may discolor after baking in or on the piece. Stoneware is dishwasher safe!. There are many color lines that can be used on stoneware: BISQUE COLORS: Duncans Concepts, Gares Fun Strokes, Maycos Stroke N Coat, and Spectrums Ultraglaze can be painted on the bisque (1-3 coats, 3 coats for glossy effect). Do not clear glaze on top of these bisque colors. UNDERGLAZES: All Underglazes, both opaque and translucent (example: Duncans Cover Coats and EZ Strokes) work well. If you want a glossy effect, clear glaze over the color. The glazes you can use are: Duncans GL612, Seeleys G1830 and Spectrums 700. When applied on high-fired stoneware bisque, please make sure you get two good coats. Since the stoneware is not porous, the glazes dry slowly, so make sure the first coat is dry before you apply the second. Using a fan to speed up is a good idea. SPECIALTY GLAZES: You can also decorate with many of the specialty glazes on the market, such as Duncans Courtyard glazes, Gares Pottery glazes, and Spectrums Low Stone glazes. Do not clear glaze on top. ACRYLICS: All non-firing stains/acrylics work great on stoneware. Only use these types of paints for decorative pieces. Baking, freezing and dishwashing the ware may destroy the color. Feel free to experiment with other types of color and glazes. Test a color or glaze that we have not listed above first, for compatibility before general use. After one coat of paint, wait until it is dry before applying a second coat (a warm dryer or fan speeds this up). Your first coat can be a thin coat, does not need to be heavy. If you are looking for the piece that will have a glossy look, pick a color you like and do 3 coats over the part of the piece you want to be glossy. Be sure to use a color that comes out glossy after firing. (Remember to wait until each coat is dry be applying the next!) Then, decorate as you wish! The wire decorating tools are wonderful for decorating a piece with fun shapes, leaves, wings, curly qs and much more. These tools make decorating easy, no brush strokes needed. There are two sets of wire tools; each set has 9 different shapes. Wipe off mistakes easily: If you make a mistake in painting, use a moist synthetic sponge to wipe off the color and start over. We recommend using a synthetic sponge. Dry footing for firing:Wipe off any color on the bottom (or foot) of the ware so that the bottom or foot is free of color. Use a wet, clean sponge to wipe off color. Place ware on the shelf to fire. Note: You may stilt stoneware bisque if you feel it is necessary. It will not harm the ware in any way.

Please clarify - Seeley recommends using Concepts on stoneware bisque without clear glazing over the Concepts. Are these stoneware pieces then considered "safe for food containers?" Duncan recommends applying appropriate clear glaze over Concepts to produce a food safe container. Thank you for your input.

Concepts is a safe to use alone on high fired stoneware alone without the glaze. The clear glaze is one you would use for ceramic bisque. The person I spoke with also talked to the lab and returned my call stating that concepts on high fired stoneware alone is in fact "food-safe". Ceramic bisque is porous needing the clear glaze as high fired stoneware is not porous and does not need the glaze. I hope this helps.

I am doing great with earthenware which pours and separates from the mold with ease. The stoneware slip is separating when I open the monds and is taking about a full day to dry in the molds. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone know of any siminars, work shops, classes, or some who can help in the state of Florida? Thanks, Larry the new, and not so good potter.

Posts: 2 (09/25/06 07:46:06) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I know you guys must be incredibly tired of answering the same questions over and over, however, when I read other queries regarding the use of the hybrid 06 bisque underglazes for decorating on stoneware, there is always something in the replies that confuses me. Your reply on this last post says that Concepts, Stroke n' Coats, Fun STrokes work beautifully on stoneware bisque fired to maturity, however, "do not put clear glaze over them". Then later in the same post, it says, for easy clean up on surfaces coming in contact with food, apply a clear glaze. Under what circumstances is it okay to apply a clear glaze over the bisque colors; and why does the diamond clear not work? Also, in a separate post, I inquired about a high fire clear glaze that will fire with a very low sheen. I purchased a jar of the cone 6 Spectrum satin clear glaze, but found that it was still quite glossy after cone 6 firing. While I understand the general principle of needing to use cone 6 clear glazes on soft-fired stoneware, I'm sure the use of clear glazes on a decorated piece would depend on many different variables such as contact with food, and the general look one desires. Since most of pieces that I would be pouring in stoneware are functional, in some cases I would want just the inside of a container sealed with a clear glaze; but others I would like an overall satin clear every where but the bottom which would be dry-footed. Also, in my case, I would be decorating on soft-fired stoneware with one of the bisque underglazes. I've heard that because of the vitreous nature of mature stoneware, clear glazes tend to craze. Why is it that the bisque colors don't craze as well? So many questions, and seems like the more answers you provide, the more questions are generated. Any clarification you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Pam
